ORIGIN:        University of Wisconsin, Rhinelander Agr. Res. Sta., Dr. Horia Groza, Breeder

PEDIGREE:  Wischip X FyF85

GENERAL COMMENTS:

W1201 is a round white chip-processing variety.  The primary strengths of this variety are its cold chipping potential, scab tolerance and above average yield.

PRODUCTION INFORMATION:

Seed spacing on this variety should be 8 to 10 inches on 34 inch rows.  W1201 has a full-season maturity that is similar to Snowden.  Nitrogen management should not exceed 200 lb. of actual N.  This variety will oversize and get a deep apical eye or sheep nose if allowed to grow.

No susceptibilities to herbicides have been noted.  This line would be expected to achieve a 400 cwt per acre yield in 120 to 140 days.  Specific gravity on this line in Michigan under irrigated conditions is expected to be around 1.085.  W1201 has moderate resistance to scab.  This variety is susceptible to late blight with blackspot susceptibility similar Snowden.  W1201 sizes well early with a late season maturity which may cause it to oversize.  Some vascular discoloration was noted in this variety

HARVEST STRATEGY:

Mid-season growing period is recommended (120 days) to keep size and sheep nose to a minimum.  Skin set should occur with in 14 days of vine kill.

STORAGE RECOMMENDATIONS:

Dormancy of this variety seems medium.  Early storage results indicate the sucrose and glucose levels are rising.  This variety exhibits a early to mid-season storage potential.

PROCESSING ABILITY:

Chip color is ok (SFA 1.5) with some internal color in March.
